Bernard Wasserstein, Professor of History, University of Chicago

Bernard Wasserstein teaches modem Jewish and Middle Eastern history at the University of Chicago. Wasserstein, who received his D.Phil. from Oxford in 1974, previously taught at Oxford, Brandeis, and Glasgow universities, and served as President of the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies from 1996-2000. His publications include, among others, The British in Palestine: The Mandatory Government and the Arab-Jewish Conflict (1978), Britain and the Jews of Europe, 1939-1945 (1979), Vanishing Diaspora: The Jews in Europe since 1945 (1996), and Divided Jerusalem: The Struggle for the Holy City (2001). His most recent work, Israelis and Palestinians: Why Do They Fight? Can They Stop? (2003), shows how demography, social relations and environmental pressures have shaped and continue to shape the nature of lsraeli-Palestinian relations.
