The Program in Jewish Culture and Society offers graduate students the option of pursuing certificates in two areas: Jewish Culture and Society & Holocaust, Genocide, and Memory Studies.

The requirements are as follows:

Jewish Culture and Society:

  1. Registration in a relevant graduate-degree granting program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
  2. Completion of JS 501 – Introduction to Graduate Study in Jewish Culture and Society.
  3. Completion of at least one additional graduate-level course relevant to Jewish Culture and Society. A relevant independent study course with affiliated program faculty also counts toward this requirement.
  4. Regular attendance of the Jewish Studies Workshop along with other programs and events sponsored by the Program in Jewish Culture and Society.
  5. Inclusion of work related to Jewish Culture and Society on qualifying examinations and in the dissertation or master’s thesis. At least one member of the examination and dissertation committees must be an affiliated faculty member of the Program in Jewish Culture and Society.

Holocaust, Genocide, and Memory Studies:

  1. Registration in a relevant graduate-degree granting program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
  2. Regular attendance at programs and events sponsored by the Holocaust, Genocide, and Memory Studies program. Contributions to the HGMS blog Days and Memory can also count toward this requirement.
  3. Completion of at least two graduate-level courses relevant to Holocaust, Genocide, and Memory Studies. Relevant independent study courses with affiliated program faculty also count toward this requirement.
  4. Inclusion of work related to Holocaust, Genocide, and Memory Studies on qualifying examinations and in the dissertation or master’s thesis. At least one member of the examination and dissertation committees must be an affiliated faculty member of the program.

Please note: The application should typically be submitted after you have completed at least one dissertation chapter or a full draft of your Master's thesis.
