Murray Baumgarten directs Jewish Studies at the Unversity of California, Santa Cruz, where is a Professor of English and Comparative Literature. He also serves as the editor of Judaism: A Journal of Jewish Life and Thought, which he edits for the American Jewish Congress, which publishes the journal. With his colleague, Peter Kenez, he holds the Neufeld-Levin Chair in Holocaust Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz. In fulfilling these roles, he has organized major international conferences on the Holocaust and Jewish Literature in recent years.

He has written widely about modern Jewish literature in North and South America as well as Israel and Europe.
